Building the Journey
After the successful building and opening of the Lake Dunstan Trail in 2021, the team were ready to turn their attention to the Kawarau Gorge Trail linking Queenstown, the Gateway, through to Central Otago.
Only to be thwarted by bureaucracy and some challenging landowners. We had to process a legislation review with the Department of Conservation to technically allow the construction of a cycle trail even though for many years the local staff had actively been supporting us. 3 years lost.

Construction Begins
In Dec 2023 the first sod's were turned in the very hard soil that began the construction of the Kawarau Gorge Trail.
This is the start of the connection between the Queenstown basin and the Central Otago area. This section of the network is the important link enabling people to travel off road from Queenstown to Dunedin and many side trails as well. This will create a network of 550km of fantastic and variable riding and walking.

Construction Challenging Yet Rewarding
Dave Howard, Southern Land’s Trail Designer/Project Manager is both humbled and excited to be part of delivering this trail for the community and visitors.
“The beauty of these trails is allowing people to experience nature, culture and history, and the Kawarau Gorge has plenty to offer on these three fronts. The Kawarau Gorge is packed with amazing terrain that will deliver a truly memorable experience for generations to come. The remote location will provide some challenges for our contractors but nothing that has not been overcome in other locations. We are looking forward to continued work with the generous landowners, and the ecological, archaeological and geotechnical teams to deliver something truly special”.
