Building the Journey
After years of planning, construction of the Lake Dunstan trail started in May 2019: the first project for the Trust. Constructing the trail was a spectacular journey in itself, necessitating high levels of engineering skill and ingenuity across tough, rugged terrain in the heart of Central Otago. Construction had to work hand in hand with both archaeologists preserving the history still found here, and environmental experts, preserving precious plants and wildlife.
Time now for the last link in this trail by connecting it to Wanaka.

What’s Ahead
The Wanaka Link Trail is a continuation of the Lake Dunstan Trail from Cromwell north beside the lake and then beside the river. Construction should be easier than the Lake Dunstan Trail, however two major challenges exist, the crossing of the Mighty Mata-Au Clutha River twice. Big spans are planned.
Opportunities
The link to Wanaka is planned to open up access to the trail for Bendigo, Tarras and Luggate. The trail will be able to follow the Clutha River Mata-Au from the lake source to close to the sea. More opportunities for connections there.
